The Australian woman who killed her husband and fed him to the kids

A woman jailed for life for stabbing her de facto husband 37 times, skinning him and cooking his body parts as a meal for his children has lost an appeal against the severity of her sentence.

The NSW Court of Criminal Appeal today dismissed an appeal by former abattoir worker Katherine Knight against her life sentence for the February 2000 murder of her partner John Price.

The NSW Supreme Court in 2001 sentenced Knight to life in jail after she pleaded guilty to murdering Mr Price at the home they shared at Aberdeen in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Knight, 50, is the first woman in Australia’s history to be sentenced to life in prison.

She had appealed against the sentence claiming the killing was not in the worst category of murder.

Knight stabbed 44-year-old Mr Price 37 times with a butcher’s knife before skinning him and hanging his hide from a meat hook in their lounge room on February 29, 2000.

She then decapitated him and put his head in a pot on the stove, baked flesh from his buttocks and cooked vegetables and gravy as side dishes to serve to Mr Price’s children.

Police found the macabre dinner before the adult children arrived home.

Judy Dater: Sabine, Arles - 1973
“Dater: From my own...

i12bent:

Judy Dater: Sabine, Arles - 1973

“Dater: From my own experience, I mean, I did this book with Jack (Welpott) where we both photographed the same people. We both photographed women -– the same women, in the same moment, in the same room and were photographing them sometimes in the nude and sometimes not but often in the nude. So there I am a young woman working with an older man and we’re both looking at the same woman and we’re both photographing the same woman and we’re getting really different pictures and everything that I said before about my personal experience working with women, yes, I can acknowledge the sexual charge there. But that was my experience of it. And Jack’s experience of it was -– or at least what he would talk about — because who knows what he was really experiencing — but the way he would talk about it -– it was very similar to the way you describe Sam [Clayberger] and his relationship to his models. It was pretty sexually -– much more sexually charged -– much more a man looking at a woman and getting off on it. Very much a seduction. I think when you’re photographing -– when anybody’s photographing another person in a private situation, it’s a kind of a seduction but it’s not always a sexual seduction.

Interviewer (PAUL KARLSTROM): That connects to power, doesn’t it?

JUDY DATER: Yeah.

PAUL KARLSTROM: And control.

JUDY DATER: And I thought -– I feel like when Jack was doing it, it was a sexual seduction and when I was doing it, it was more of a psychological seduction in order to get them to cooperate with me. Not because I wanted them to spread their legs or … be, you know, “Wanna sleep with me?”, or whatever. Nothing followed through. I think for sure he did sometimes but not every time, and that wasn’t always what was gonna happen. But he was pretty up front about his sexual desires for these women and …

PAUL KARLSTROM: He discussed that with you?

JUDY DATER: He didn’t exactly discuss it but he certainly let me know. And, of course, it totally pissed me off but I was there, sort of protecting my territory so nothing was gonna happen right at that minute and they knew that but, I mean, that was a little game we were playing, I’m sure.

PAUL KARLSTROM: Yeah. Gee, this is really interesting. What a interesting scenario because it sounds to me there is seduction present that relates to getting something from the model -– different things between you. But it sounds to me there’s also a kind of -– I don’t know what term to use. It’s not sparring, exactly, but this has to do with your relationship. Were you guys married then?

JUDY DATER: Not yet, I don’t think. - Oh no, yes we were. Of course we were. Yes we were. When did we get married? In 1971 or 2. Oh maybe we started it before we were married but then we got married and then we continued it for a while.

PAUL KARLSTROM: When did you get married?

JUDY DATER: I’m tryin’ to remember. ‘70 or ‘71, I guess. We bought this house in San Anselmo first in 1970 and we mighta gotten married that year. But after -– the house -– the house is what got us to get married, mainly.

PAUL KARLSTROM: I don’t want to divert this but it just occurs to me, when we were talking about power -– starting out with the assumption that’s a basic component in human interaction. But I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing at all. It’s a way of maneuvering. It just strikes me -– the way you describe this — that there is a kind of power play or game certainly on Jack’s part. I don’t know about you. And he’s setting this up. Not that that’s the primary goal but -– from what you said — it sounds as if that was present. Like making a statement? Kind of a…

JUDY DATER: I’m trying to think about the dynamic of how it -– how these things came to be because we photographed a lot of different women together over a period of several years and we did talk about doing … when I first met Jack he had already started photographing women and he had done nudes and then I -– and I was doing them on my own and there were even -– I think what happened was there were actually a couple of people that we both had photographed before we started working on this thing together but -– and they were young women and they were probably students because those were the people I was photographing. So they were his students and my fellow students. And he had photographed a few of ‘em and then of course he and I started having this relationship and then we saw that we had done some of the same people and so we came up with this idea. “Why don’t we photograph the same women and you do it your way and I’ll do it my way and then we’ll put the pictures together and see what comes out of it.” So we agreed that we were gonna do this thing together and so that was -– that was the set up of how it happened. And sometimes the people would be people that I would see and sometimes they’d be people that he would see. Sometimes we’d see them together and we would agree that we were gonna photograph them but I knew, I mean, I was very aware of Jack’s nature. In terms of his relationships with women and his desire for women and maybe I thought this was a safe way to -– a safe outlet. “You can photograph ‘em all you want but I’m gonna be right there with you.” (Source)

Palmer Hayden: Midsummer Night in Harlem, 1938

“Following his return from Paris in 1932, Hayden worked on the United States Treasury Art Project and the W.P.A. Art Project from 1934 to 1940, and painted scenes of the New York waterfront and other local subjects. During the late 1930s Hayden developed a consciously naive style, which represented various aspects of African-American life. One of the first paintings that heralded Hayden’s new style was Midsummer Night in Harlem, 1938, in which he effectively evoked the mood of Harlem’s residents congregating outside to escape the heat inside the tenements. Despite the flat forms and stylized figures, the compositional arrangement and treatment of perspective reveal Hayden’s academic training. African-American art historian James Porter apparently misunderstood Hayden’s objectives when he criticized Midsummer Night in Harlem as a talent gone astray,” and compared the painting to “one of those billboards that once were plastered on public buildings to advertise black face minstrels.” Hayden insisted, however, that he was not striving for satirical effects in his African-American folk paintings, but that he wanted to achieve a new type of expression.” - Regenia A. Perry. Free within Ourselves: African-American Artists in the Collection of the National Museum of American Art (Washington, D.C.: National Museum of American Art in Association with Pomegranate Art Books, 1992).

Gabriel

Also known as Jibril, Gabriel is known as the spirit of truth or “Angel of Revelations” in Islamic tradition. Oh, he’s an angel by the way. In the Islamic view of things, he stands at the apex of the angelic host, and is said to have dictated to Qur’an to Muhammad. In the Bible, however, Gabriel appears as the messenger of Yahweh. He visited Daniel (an Old Testament patriarch) twice, and he brought the virgin Mary the tidings that she was to conceive Jesus. He’s also the trumpeter who will sound the Last Judgment, according to the crazy ol’ book of Revelations.

In Hebrew apocalyptic literature, Gabriel is an angel of retribution and death, but in Islamic writings he is an angel of high rank and a messenger of peace, for the most part. It’s difficult to peg him in the angelic hierarchy; Gabriel is mentioned as an Archangel, but the Archangels are in the lowest sphere, and are the second-lowest ranking in the whole hierarchy (only regular “angels” are below them). However, he is also described as sitting at the left hand of god with Metatron, a Seraphim, (the highest rank) and indeed the throne of god is reserved for angels of the first sphere. You’re a bit of a mystery, Gabriel, but you’re definitely important.

Pan

Pan is the semi-lovable faun-type-thing from Greek mythology. His parentage is unclear, with Zeus, Hermes, or Dionysus all contenders for fatherhood, but his mother is almost definitely a nymph. Even though he’s often thought of as a lesser deity, he had renowned parentage, and maintained status of an important Greek god. He is usually depicted with goat-like horns, a shaggy face and hair, and the legs and hooves of a goat.

Pan is known for being playful and energetic, with his preferred musical instrument, the pipes/pan flute, always on hand. Pan could be a frightening god when he wanted to be, blowing on a conch to inflict terror on any who heard the sound it made. He used this fear-inducing conch to help scatter the Titans and aid the Olympians in their war, and is also credited with putting panic in the hearts of the Persian armies in the Battle of Marathon.

Music was his thing, and he wouldn’t shut up about how talented he was. He even claimed to be better than Apollo, god of the lyre, in this regard, and Apollo wasn’t about to suffer a little half-goat rival. After whooping Pan in a straight-up music contest, the faun demanded a rematch. Apollo set the terms that they would play upside-down, and while his lyre-playing was unaffected, Pan couldn’t operate his pipes in that position, and Apollo took the win.

Persephone is the daughter of Demeter...

Hades and Persephone

bythegods:

Persephone

Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, the bride and niece of Hades, and a consort of Zeus as well. Daddy issues. First of all: the practice of marrying your daughter to your brother in Greek tradition was fairly common; it kept all the property in the family. Second: are you really surprised that the god who bangs anything that moves would get it on with his own offspring? It’s kind of Zeus’ thing.

Persephone is symbolized by the poppy, mint, pomegranate, young grain, paint and flowers. For half the year she lives with her husband in the underworld, and during this period her mother mourns her and the world experiences winter. During the other half of the year she lives up on earth, Demeter rejoices, and the world experiences spring. Tra-la-la!

As the wife of Hades she is known as the Queen of the underworld, and is considered more powerful than Hades (not surprising, given her parentage). In fact, Persephone was considered the Queen of the underworld before Hades became the god of the underworld; a fine example of those lovely retroactive and non-universal changes made by one of the multitude of minor-authority figures within the scholarly and traditional world of a regional religion. Consistency is not always easy to come by in myth, and the position of gods and goddesses are always changing!

Persephone, Zeus fathered Zagreus and Melinoe. Persephone lay with Zeus in snake-form to produce Zagreus, Zeus’s intended heir who Hera quickly dispatched. Zeus disguised himself as Hades to seduce Persephone on another occasion, and Melinoe, the goddess of ghosts, was the result. Why Zeus thought that disguising himself as Persephone’s hateful husband was a good idea, I couldn’t say. I guess, in terms of gettin’ busy, ‘jealous, angry, kidnapping husband’ is one notch above ‘dad.’ With Hades, Persephone gave birth to Macaria, the minor goddess of blissful death. In one of Euripides’ plays, however, Macaria was the daughter of Heracles. Inconsistencies: gotta love ‘em!

The Eighth Labour of Heracles
For his next task,...

bythegods:

The Eighth Labour of Heracles

For his next task, King Eurystheus commanded Heracles to steal the infamous mares of Diomedes. Diomedes was the king of Thrace and a son of Ares the god of war, and if that isn’t enough to convince you that he was a badass, he was also a giant. Giants are renowned in almost every culture due to their penchant for excessive violence.

Heracles took a few volunteers with him and tried to sneak away with the four horses before Diomedes noticed them, but he was missing some critical info about his targets. Like the fact that they could breath fire for instance. Or the fact that they ate flesh and were bat-shit crazy. It was probably one of those happy little surprises that raised the alarm. Diomedes gave chase, and Heracles turned to face the giant king, leaving the care of the homicidal broncos in the capable hands of his buddy Abderus. That poor bastard.

Heracles had Diomedes beat, but while he wasn’t looking Abderus was eaten (probably after being burned and kicked a few times by the sadistic nags). In an act of rage induced vengeance worthy of Uma Thurman, Heracles fed Diomedes to his insatiable pet ponies, which was apparently gross/poetic enough to finally calm them down a bit. Before heading back to King Eurystheus with his equestrian prize, Heracles took the time to found the town of Abderba as a solid for his fallen fellow horse thief.

When Heracles returned with the mares, Eurystheus was understandably hesitant about keeping them around. He ordered the horses taken to Olympus to be sacrificed to Zeus, but even the king of the gods didn’t want any of that noise. Where you or I might discreetly return an unwanted gift for store credit, Zeus has no qualms about letting you know how he feels about a crappy present. He sent wolves, bears, and lions to murder those horses. Probably along with a note that uninvited Eurystheus from all his future birthday parties, too.
